Inclusive counting and why deadlines slip

The commonest source of off-by-one errors in date arithmetic is whether the end date counts. Subtracting 1 March from 5 March gives 4, but a hotel booking for those dates is 4 nights and 5 days, and a project running “from the 1st to the 5th” usually means 5 working days. Contracts and statutes are frequently explicit about this for exactly that reason, using phrases like “within 30 days of” versus “no later than the 30th day after”.

Business-day counting has its own subtleties. This tool excludes Saturday and Sunday, which covers most Western commercial contexts but not all, the working week runs Sunday to Thursday in much of the Middle East, and public holidays vary by country and often by region within a country. Since holidays cannot be inferred reliably from a date alone, they are not deducted here; check the result against the relevant calendar for anything contractual.

Adding months is genuinely ambiguous rather than merely fiddly. What is one month after 31 January? Most systems, including this one, clamp to the last valid day and give 28 or 29 February, but some roll over into 3 March instead. That means adding a month twice does not always equal adding two months, so for recurring schedules it is safer to calculate each date from the original anchor rather than from the previous result.
